List of Hobbies: Definitive List of 1,000+ Interests & Hobby Ideas

Last Updated on

So you must be looking for a list of hobbies to find something new to get into? Finding a new hobby is not easy – so hopefully this hobby list can help!

Our hobby list has over 1,000 (and counting!) hobby ideas and interests for you browse.

I’m going to be straight with you though.

Finding a new interest or passion is a great way to keep yourself busy, but it’s hard to find one and stick with it.

BUT

Learning a new hobby new is fun – and challenging – just the thing you need to need to keep yourself from getting too bored with life.

Unfortunately, some of us don’t find our hobby naturally. So hopefully we can help push you in the right direction with this list of hobbies that will make you dizzy with possibilities.

So, let’s get started in finding a new hobby!

What is a Hobby?

Before we go on our scavenger hunt of finding a new hobby, let’s define the meaning of what a hobby is.

To me, the definition of a hobby is something that is:

  1. Recreational activities for fun, entertainment, or enjoyment
  2. Performed in someone’s downtime or “leisure time”
  3. Not a main occupation, source of income, or job
  4. Require specific skills and knowledge in a specific area of expertise
  5. Also referred to as a “pastime” or a way to “pass the time”

So really – A hobby is anything you want it to be! As long as you enjoy it in your free time :).

But, what is a “Hobby” Anyway?

The origin of the word “hobby” actually dates back to the 1660s and involved a horse (better known as a hobbyhorse).

Essentially, hobby horses were created for children to mimic riding a real horse. This evolved into the word “hobby” being adopted into the official language as a way to describe leisurely recreational activities.

In a way, people don’t select hobbies. Their natural interests pick hobbies for them.

That doesn’t mean we can’t try to find a new one!

Why Do We Need a New Hobby?

You love your hobbies and unique interests, right? For many of us, our hobbies are some of the most enjoyable things we have in our lives.

Whether it’s being obsessed with watching a television show, a particular sport (watching or playing), enjoying a specific type of art, reading a certain genre or author, working on cars, cooking and baking fun food, or even playing a particular board or card game with family and friends; we all have unique interests and hobbies!

Hobbies make us human! Interests with certain topics helped spur our brains and make us the people we are today. Imagine how boring life would be if you did nothing but work, study, sleep and eat.

  • Hobbies offer us a new challenge!
    • Challenging our daily routines is always a good thing. Challenging ourselves is healthy as it gives us a goal to strive towards. It also stimulates our brains when we’re forced to learn new skills or information.
  • Hobbies offer a variety of health benefits!
  • Whether it’s reducing stress, keeping you active, or a variety of other reasons, hobbies offer us a healthy outlet for the extra time you may have when you’re bored.

Dancing Hobbies

Dancing to music has been a hobby of humans for thousands of years. In fact, many experts believe early humans danced frequently as shown in a recent study of chimpanzees.

There are so many different types of dances, I had to list them all out for you to look into!

Musical Instrument Hobbies:

Just as we have with dancing, I’ve listed a number of musical instruments you can learn as a hobby.

Humans have played instruments and sung music for as long as history has been recorded.

This type of hobby is great, as you’ll spend time learning new songs, practicing your instrument, playing with friends, and the overall satisfaction you’ll get from hearing yourself play music.

Cooking & Drink Hobbies

Cooking is something many of us do on a daily basis, but many others enjoy cooking as a great hobby

But how much do you actually enjoy cooking? Not as much as you probably could be!

Stop cooking the same old stuff and learn some new recipes.

Not only that, but there are so many other ways to cook food it’s crazy.

not only will this hobby help kill some time, but your taste buds (and wallet!) will thank you later too!

You May Already Have a Hobby – Which is Great!

To illustrate that everyone has hobbies already, or at the very least what a hobby can be for you, I bet that you can name at least ONE hobby that a friend or family member of yours has.

Don’t believe me?

Fine, let me try it out!

  • My best friend dedicates massive amounts of time to mastering the guitar. He practices, gigs, and is constantly playing his guitars. He also dedicates a lot of his extra “fun money” in new guitar equipment. He’s also a big computer guy.
  • My sister LOVES dogs. So much so that she created a profession out of her hobby by training them for a living! How cool is that?
  • My wife loves running (no idea why!), and is really good at it! When the weather is decent outside, she takes runs for miles. She enjoys this activity so much, she got her family to start doing marathons with her. She also loves baking, ready, and photography.
  • I have two other friends who are absolutely obsessed with all things theatre. They go to all the shows in town, act in their own shows, listen to music, follow the actors, and even travel to New York whenever they can.
  • My uncle has several hobbies. He collects and listens to records, knows everything there is about audio equipment, loves Jazz music and its history, enjoys amateur photography, and travels around the world when time permits.

So, as you can see from this list of hobbies – a hobby can be literally anything you want it to be.

As long as you consider yourself someone that dedicates a fair amount of time to that subject, you’ve got yourself a hobby!
